How to get rid of trapped gas: what helps fast, and what does not

Short answer

To get rid of trapped gas, get up and move: walking is the step sources name most, and MedlinePlus suggests a 10 to 15 minute walk after eating.3 In a small trial in healthy adults, gas cleared faster upright than lying on the back.11 Warmth on your belly, peppermint tea and simethicone, an over-the-counter medicine, are other options sources list. A probiotic is not fast relief.

The short list

  • Gas pain can happen when gas is trapped or not moving well through your digestive system, Mayo Clinic says, and it can feel like pain, cramps or a knotted feeling in your stomach.1
  • MedlinePlus lists walking for 10 to 15 minutes after eating among its home tips for gas.3
  • In 8 healthy adults, gas moved through the gut faster upright than lying on the back: after an hour, 13 ml was still retained upright, against 146 ml lying down.11
  • Simethicone may help gas pass, but Mayo Clinic reports little clinical support for it easing gas symptoms.2
  • Get urgent help if you cannot pass gas or poo, or if belly pain comes on very suddenly or is severe.7

What is trapped gas, and how do you know it is gas?

Trapped gas is gas that is not moving well through your gut. Mayo Clinic says gas pain can happen when gas is trapped or slow to move, and lists pain, cramps or a knotted feeling in the stomach, a sense of fullness or pressure, and sometimes a visibly larger belly. The surest clue is relief: when chest pain from gas follows eating or drinking, Cleveland Clinic says, burping or passing gas brings immediate relief.1,8

The NHS puts "Feeling bloated, farting a lot" next to trapped wind on its list of common stomach aches, and MedlinePlus says cramp-like belly pain is likely to be due to gas and bloating and is not serious most of the time. It calls that kind of pain more worrisome when it happens more often, lasts more than 24 hours, or comes with a fever or rectal bleeding.7,4

Trapped gas can also travel up: gas caught in the upper abdomen can cause intense chest pain that is very hard to tell apart from a heart attack, Cleveland Clinic gastroenterologist Christine Lee, MD, says. Never wait out chest pain.8

What helps trapped gas fast? Steps sources list

Moving, staying upright and giving the gas a way out. Cleveland Clinic calls letting it out, by burping or passing gas, the most direct relief, and every step below helps gas move along. Each row is what one source says, with the time it gives when it gives one; most give none, and the table says so instead of guessing.8

Does walking really help move gas?

Yes, in the one controlled study we found. In 2004, researchers in Barcelona infused a gas mixture into the small intestine of 8 healthy adults and compared rest with gentle pedalling while they lay down. During the exercise, the gut held on to less gas and the belly swelled less. Their conclusion was that mild physical activity speeds the movement of gas through the gut in healthy people.12

The numbers: on average the gut retained 143 ml of gas at rest, while during exercise it cleared more than went in, a net of minus 84 ml. Belly girth rose 8 mm at rest and 3 mm with exercise, and the volunteers tolerated the gas load well either way. The study was small and used gas pumped in through a tube, not gas from a meal, and it was funded in part by a US National Institutes of Health grant.12

"In healthy subjects, gut transit of intraluminal gas is enhanced by mild physical activity."

Dainese and colleagues, American Journal of Medicine, 2004

Movement helps on a longer timescale too. Mayo Clinic notes that regular exercise lowers the risk of constipation, which can hold gas back in the colon.2

Which position helps trapped gas?

Upright, by the evidence we found. In a 2003 study of 8 healthy adults, gas infused into the small intestine moved through faster when they were upright than when they lay on their backs: after an hour, 13 ml was retained upright against 146 ml lying down. No source we checked tested the knee-to-chest and other lying-down stretches often suggested for gas.11

The same study cleared a tracer gas faster upright, 72% against 49% at 60 minutes, and the authors concluded that "transit is faster in the upright position than when supine." Cleveland Clinic names yoga alongside walking without naming poses, and its gastroenterologist Michael Cline, DO, advises waiting at least two hours after eating to lie down.11,8,9

"Also move around: The combination of gravity and activity will help it get through your gut faster"

Michael Cline, DO, gastroenterologist, Cleveland Clinic, 2025

Lying down is when many people notice it. One public post we read put it this way: "Absolutely zero symptoms in the day, but trapped gas and 'hot abdomen' when going to bed." (r/Microbiome, Sep 2026; a question, not a review.)

Do peppermint tea, ginger or other warm drinks help?

They are on source lists, without numbers. The NHS includes drinking peppermint tea among its steps for passing a lot of gas, and Cleveland Clinic suggests ginger tea, a piece of candied ginger, or warm water with a sprinkle of powdered ginger for trapped gas. Neither gives a time frame, and the one ginger trial in healthy adults that we found recorded no significant difference in gut symptoms.6,8

That trial, its numbers, and the cautions for peppermint oil capsules are set out in supplements for bloating: which have evidence, and which habits come first. For mild belly pain in general, MedlinePlus suggests sipping water or other clear fluids.4

Do over-the-counter gas medicines work faster?

Not reliably. Simethicone, the usual choice, breaks gas bubbles apart and may help gas move along, but Mayo Clinic reports little clinical support for it easing gas symptoms. The NHS suggests asking a pharmacist, and Cleveland Clinic says to try it if your healthcare provider agrees. Form matters for speed: chewable and liquid medicines bring relief faster than a pill, a Cleveland Clinic gastroenterologist says.2,6,8,9

Timing matters too. "By the time you're gassy, the food that caused it is mostly in your colon or the middle of your small bowel," Dr. Cline says, so he suggests taking simethicone before you eat.9 There is one interaction to know: Cleveland Clinic's Irina Todorov, MD, says simethicone can lower the absorption of thyroid medicines such as levothyroxine, so the two should be taken at least four hours apart, and she suggests asking a pharmacist about interactions first.10

Some medicines slow the gut down, Cleveland Clinic notes, naming narcotics, some pain medicines and some allergy medicines; ask your doctor before changing a prescribed one.8

Is a probiotic fast relief for trapped gas?

No. A probiotic is a daily product taken over weeks, not something that moves gas that is already trapped. Over those weeks, the strain decides what it can do: NIH's Office of Dietary Supplements says a product's health benefits, if any, are determined by the strains it contains and the number of CFUs, so choose one studied for bloating and gas. NIH also writes that "In healthy people, probiotics may cause gas," so a new one can add gas at first rather than take it away.13

The strain trials on this site that measured bloating ran 4 to 8 weeks, and they are set out in what is the best probiotic for bloating? What extra gas in the first weeks of a new probiotic usually looks like, and when to stop, is in gas in the first weeks of a probiotic.

When is trapped gas an emergency?

When you cannot pass gas or stool, or the pain is sudden, severe or in your chest. The NHS says to call 999, the UK emergency number, if a stomach ache came on very suddenly or is severe, or if you cannot poo or fart, and MedlinePlus says to call 911 or get medical help right away if you are unable to pass stool, especially if you are also vomiting.7,4

  • You cannot pass gas or poo, or cannot pass stool and are vomiting
  • Belly pain that came on suddenly, is sharp or is severe
  • Any chest pain: do not assume it is gas
  • A belly that is tender, or rigid and hard to the touch
  • Vomiting blood, or blood in your stool

From the NHS stomach ache and bloating pages, MedlinePlus on abdominal pain, and Mayo Clinic, which says to seek immediate care for chest pain or prolonged stomach pain. Book a regular visit if bloating lasts more than 2 days or belly discomfort lasts a week or longer (MedlinePlus), or if gas comes with constipation, diarrhea, or ongoing or recurring nausea (Mayo Clinic).

The short version

Trapped gas usually eases once it can move: get upright, walk for 10 to 15 minutes, and try warmth, a belly massage or a warm drink. Simethicone is an option, though the evidence for it is thin, and a probiotic is a weeks-long product, not fast relief. Gas you cannot pass, sudden severe pain or any chest pain needs urgent care.

How we put this together

  1. What people asked. Of 1,145 public Reddit posts from 250 communities, September 12 to October 12, 2026, 258 were about gas and burping, and 5 mentioned trapped gas or trapped wind. The quote in the position section is one of them, shown as a question, not a review.
  2. The question. "How to get rid of trapped gas", with what people ask next: how to relieve it fast, which position, and whether a probiotic helps.
  3. Sources. 13 outside sources, opened on Oct 15, 2026: MedlinePlus, the NHS, Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, NIH's Office of Dietary Supplements and two trial records on PubMed. NIH's probiotics sheet was read again on Oct 28, 2026. Quotes are copied from each page.
  4. What we left out. Results from studies in people with a diagnosed digestive condition, and the causes of gas, which this page does not cover.
  5. Label and wording. One confirmed fact from the Bloat + Gas Probiotic label, and two lines of Physician's Choice approved wording, used word for word.

Common questions

How do you get rid of trapped gas fast?
Get upright and walk. MedlinePlus suggests walking for 10 to 15 minutes after eating, and a small trial in healthy adults found gas moved through faster upright than lying down. The NHS adds exercise and a belly massage, and Cleveland Clinic a heating pad. Simethicone is an option, though Mayo Clinic reports little clinical support for it.
How long does trapped gas last?
No source we checked gives a time. Cleveland Clinic says that when chest pain from gas follows eating or drinking, burping or passing gas brings immediate relief. MedlinePlus calls cramp-like belly pain more worrisome if it lasts more than 24 hours or comes with fever or rectal bleeding, and bloating that persists past 2 days needs a provider.
What position helps relieve trapped gas?
Upright. In a 2003 study of 8 healthy adults, gas moved through the gut faster upright than lying on the back. Cleveland Clinic suggests walking or yoga, and waiting at least two hours after eating before you lie down. We found no study of the knee-to-chest stretches often suggested for gas.
Can trapped gas cause chest pain?
It can. Cleveland Clinic says gas trapped in the upper abdomen can cause intense chest pain that is very hard to tell apart from a heart attack. Take any chest pain seriously: Mayo Clinic says to seek immediate care for chest pain, and if you think you might be having a heart attack, call 911.
Do probiotics help trapped gas?
Not as fast relief. A probiotic is taken daily over weeks, so choose one whose strain was studied for bloating and gas, at the daily amount its trial used. NIH's Office of Dietary Supplements writes that probiotics may cause gas in healthy people, so a new one can add gas at first.
