Do probiotics make you poop? What trials measured on stool frequency

Short answer

Not like a laxative. In trials of adults with constipation, probiotics added about one bowel movement a week: a 2014 review of 14 trials (1,182 adults) found 1.3 more a week and gut transit 12.4 hours faster, with Bifidobacterium lactis showing effects and Lactobacillus casei Shirota not.1 In adults without constipation, the change in gut transit was small.6

The short list

  • In a 2014 review of 14 trials in 1,182 adults with constipation, probiotics added 1.3 bowel movements a week and sped whole-gut transit by 12.4 hours; no serious adverse events were reported.1
  • In a 2022 review of 30 trials, 57% of adults with constipation responded on a probiotic against 44% on placebo; stool frequency rose, but stool consistency did not change.2
  • Strain matters: B. lactis raised stool frequency in 2025 dietitians' guidelines, while L. casei Shirota, multi-strain mixtures and Bacillus coagulans Unique IS2 did not.3
  • In adults without constipation, probiotics shortened gut transit time only slightly, and not to a statistically clear degree, in a 2013 analysis of 11 trials.6
  • Loose or hard stools can show up in the first days of a new probiotic, Cleveland Clinic says, more often when the dose is big or the gut is sensitive.8

Do probiotics make you poop more?

If you are constipated, a little more, on average. Trials in adults with constipation found probiotics added about one bowel movement a week: 1.3 in a 2014 review of 14 trials and 0.98 in a 2020 review of 15. Food also moved through the gut faster, by 12.4 and 13.75 hours. NCCIH sums up the 2014 review as showing "some evidence of benefit, especially for Bifidobacterium lactis."1,4,7

These are changes counted over weeks of daily use, not within hours of a dose. Every one of these trials enrolled adults with long-term constipation, so they do not show what a probiotic does to someone whose bowel habits are already regular; the 2013 analysis further down is the closest look at that. NCCIH also reports a 2017 evaluation of 9 studies (778 participants) in older people, which found "a small but meaningful benefit."7

"Caution is needed with the interpretation of these data due to their high heterogeneity and risk of bias."

Dimidi and colleagues, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2014

How much do probiotics change stool frequency?

Modestly, and less once publication bias is counted. A 2017 review of 21 studies in 2,656 adults with constipation found 0.83 more bowel movements a week, which fell to 0.30 after the authors adjusted for publication bias; that review was funded by a probiotic ingredient company that employed two of its three authors. A 2022 review of 30 trials counted 57% responders on a probiotic against 44% on placebo.5,2

On stool form, the reviews disagree. The 2014 review found stool consistency improved, by a standardized difference of 0.55. The 2022 review of 30 trials found no change in consistency (0.26, p = 0.08), and the British Dietetic Association's 2025 guidelines, built on that review, concluded that "Probiotics overall, and some specific species, increase stool frequency, but do not impact stool consistency in constipation."1,2,3 If your stools get harder after starting a probiotic, that is a different question, set out in can probiotics cause constipation?

Which probiotic strains changed stool frequency in trials?

Bifidobacterium lactis most often. It raised stool frequency in the 2014 review, by 1.5 bowel movements a week, and across seven trials in the 2025 guidelines, though a 2020 review found its effect alone not statistically clear. Lactobacillus casei Shirota did not change stool frequency in the reviews that looked at it separately. Each row below is what changed and what did not, as the review reports it.1,3,4

Every row except the last comes from trials in adults with long-term constipation; none of these trials tested a Physician's Choice product.

Do probiotics make you poop if you are not constipated?

Not much, by the evidence we found. A 2013 analysis of 11 trials in 464 adults, some healthy and some constipated, found probiotics shortened intestinal transit time overall, but the effect was bigger with constipation (a standardized difference of 0.59) than without it (0.17, a result that was not statistically clear). Older adults responded more too. We found no review that pooled stool frequency in healthy adults.6

Two Bifidobacterium lactis strains, HN019 and DN-173 010, showed the largest effects in that analysis, while other single strains and combinations showed small ones. Its conclusion is about short-term use and transit time, not how often people go. One of its two authors worked for a probiotic ingredient company.6

How long does a probiotic take to change bowel movements?

Weeks, by the trials. In an expert-opinion statement, the British Dietetic Association's 2025 guidelines say clinicians may advise people with constipation who want to try a probiotic to take one "for at least 4 weeks, following the instructions recommended by the manufacturer." Their analysis found no difference in stool frequency results between trials shorter or longer than 4 weeks.3

The same guidelines are frank about strains: "in general, there is a lack of convincing evidence to recommend specific strains of probiotics in constipation."3 That is why the table above reads strain by strain rather than ranking products.

Can a new probiotic give you loose stools or constipation?

For a short time, yes, in either direction. Cleveland Clinic says looser or harder stools and stomach pain can follow a new probiotic in the short term, more often with a big dose or a sensitive gut, and that a sudden rise in short-chain fatty acids "could cause temporary diarrhea." That early change is a side effect, not the slow shift the trials above measured.8

When should bowel changes send you to a doctor?

When they do not settle with self-care, or come with warning signs. NIDDK says to see a doctor if constipation symptoms do not go away with self-care, and to go straight away when constipation arrives with one of these signs.9

  • Bleeding from your rectum, or blood in your stool
  • Constant pain in your belly
  • You cannot pass gas, or you are vomiting
  • Fever, or lower back pain
  • Your weight is dropping without trying

The short version

A probiotic is not a laxative. In trials of adults with constipation, some strains, B. lactis most consistently, added about one bowel movement a week and sped gut transit by about half a day, while others changed nothing; in people without constipation, the effect on transit was small. A new probiotic can loosen or firm stools for a short time, and changes that last need a doctor.

How we put this together

  1. What people asked. Of 1,145 public Reddit posts from 250 communities, September 12 to October 12, 2026, 62 were tagged as probiotics posts, and 15 of those mentioned poop, stools, bowel movements, regularity, constipation or diarrhea. None is quoted here.
  2. The question. "Do probiotics make you poop?", with what people ask next: whether a probiotic helps with constipation, which strain, and how long it takes.
  3. Sources. 9 outside sources, opened on Oct 16, 2026: four meta-analyses, a 2013 transit-time analysis, the British Dietetic Association's 2025 guidelines, NCCIH, Cleveland Clinic and NIDDK. Numbers are copied from each abstract or full text.
  4. What we left out. Trials in children, results for conditions other than constipation, and laxatives, which are a different question.
  5. Label and wording. One confirmed fact from the Bloat + Gas Probiotic label, and three lines of Physician's Choice approved wording, used word for word.

Common questions

Do probiotics make you poop?
Not like a laxative. In trials of adults with constipation, probiotics added about one bowel movement a week on average, and some strains, Bifidobacterium lactis most often, did better than others. In adults without constipation, a 2013 analysis found only a small change in gut transit. A new probiotic can also loosen stools for a short time.
Do probiotics help with constipation?
Some strains did in trials. A 2022 review of 30 trials found 57% of adults responded on a probiotic against 44% on placebo, and 2025 dietitians' guidelines found B. lactis raised stool frequency, while finding the evidence for specific strains unconvincing overall. If constipation does not get better with changes to what you eat and drink, talk to your doctor.
How long does a probiotic take to change bowel movements?
Trials ran for weeks. The British Dietetic Association's 2025 guidelines suggest trying a probiotic for at least 4 weeks, following the maker's instructions, and found no difference in stool frequency results between trials shorter or longer than 4 weeks. Loose stools in the first days are a different thing: a short-term side effect, per Cleveland Clinic.
Which probiotic is best for constipation?
No single one is named. In reviews, Bifidobacterium lactis strains raised stool frequency most consistently, while Lactobacillus casei Shirota did not, and multi-strain mixtures gave mixed results. The 2025 British Dietetic Association guidelines found a lack of convincing evidence to recommend specific strains and suggest trying one for at least 4 weeks.
Can probiotics make you poop too much?
For a short time, they can. Cleveland Clinic links loose stools in the first days of a new probiotic to a sudden rise in the short-chain fatty acids some probiotics make, and says big doses and sensitive guts make it more likely. This site's guide to loose stools sets out what to do and when to call a doctor.
